‘Our Sensory Space’ was an idea we had not long after our young son was diagnosed with Autism. We were looking for a place to visit that would enable him to have fun and be his awesome self in a supportive environment.
A safe place where we would not feel like we needed to explain his behaviour or apologise for him. A place where everyone gets it. Although there is some amazing places to see and fantastic things to do here on the Sunshine Coast, it can be difficult to find fun and engaging services designed specifically for children on the spectrum and children with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). This is where the idea for ‘Our Sensory Space’ began…
Like most parents with a fresh diagnosis for their children do, we immersed ourselves in research regarding children on the spectrum. We read books, asked questions, started seeing an Occupational Therapist and Speech Therapist, surfed the web and joined forums to educate ourselves as much as possible in order to prepare for our amazing boys uncharted future, and to give him the best possible start. Along the way, we stumbled across the idea of sensory gyms and darkrooms which are specially designed spaces for children that usually struggle to cope in everyday social play environments. ‘Perfect!’we thought. ‘This is exactly what he needs’.
And so, the idea for Our Sensory Space was born.
